An existing Victorian terrace has been creatively enlarged and re-skinned to provide further affordable workspace overlooking Gillett Square, a community-focused public plaza in Dalston.
Working within tight budgetary constraints, the architects adopted a number of design and constructional moves that on their own are logical but which, taken together, elevate the project’s social potential. The result is a place of real interaction between the tenants and further engagement with the public.
The existing three-storey terrace has been extended both horizontally and vertically, and clad in a vibrant polycarbonate carapace. A new double-height external terrace not only provides access to the units but faces the square, providing opportunities for tenants to meet and enjoy the activity there. Above, a new pitched roof creates bigger units with mezzanines neatly inserted below the ridge line. At ground floor, small pods open out to address the square fully.
