This new private housing creates a strong and delightful sense of place, intelligently exploiting the constraints of working within a Conservation Area.

The housing is set back from the listed buildings, and the car parking well controlled, opening up a generous car-free public realm. The landscaping is well designed and executed, with fine natural materials, good detailing, a subtle approach to defensible space and bespoke art commissions which resonate well. T

he material palette across the scheme is very successful - the light grey brickwork particularly setting a gentle foil to the listed sandstone churches and sitting well next to the historic red brick housing.

Together with the stone of the landscaping this creates a harmonious composition and a light cheerful atmosphere. The housing is well tuned to residents wishes, with open plan entrance living rooms and roof terraces giving generosity and adaptability.
