This is the sensitive refurbishment, restoration and extension of an un-listed Victorian chapel, within the heart of the University campus. The jury felt it was particularly encouraging to see a building from the Victorian era being sensitively treated as a heritage asset to be cared for, with previous harm undone. The additions enhanced the whole, and were readily distinct from the original.
Comprising two distinct parts: the uncovering, reinstatement and additions to the former chapel; and its extension to increase the functional use of the spaces. The changes to the chapel play to the University’s artistic roots, placing a new draught lobby, with sculptural altar and font within the chapel, the uncovering of the roof and a tile backdrop to the altar re-discover a richness which had been lost through the insensitive additions.
The new vestry and the creation of a new chapel space use light coming through from the outside to dramatic effect. Whilst the elements are bold, the whole retains the calm and measured feel of a chapel - very important for the function of such a space. Architecturally, the new addition to the north side is a ‘jewel’ at the heart of the campus, which will mark new through routes when later phases of the masterplan are complete.
The new part is clad in gold anodised aluminium to wall and roof, on a tapering and twisted roof pitch, to negotiate between the tight external spaces, daylight and internal spaces.
A clever project, with an impact beyond its scale.
