The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Members uphold the gold standard set by the professional codes of conduct and practice. However, in the circumstance where a Member falls short of that standard, the RIBA has a rigorous and impartial procedure for the consideration of allegations of professional misconduct against its Members and Chartered Practices. Appraisal Teams and Disciplinary Hearing Panels, selected from the Professional Conduct Panel, investigate complaints and make decisions on misconduct, imposing sanctions where appropriate. The Professional Conduct Panel includes both RIBA Members and Lay members.
Recruitment to the Professional Conduct Panel is open and we are inviting applications from engaged and passionate individuals who can use their experience, skills and good judgement to help RIBA Members fulfil their obligations in respect of the Code of Conduct and Code of Practice.
Person specification:
- Demonstrable commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and its importance to the work of the Panel.
- Awareness of the regulatory function of professional conduct and the importance this plays in the public perception of RIBA and the wider profession.
- Experience working on similar regulatory panels or committees is desirable*
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to analyse complex material and demonstrate clear logical thinking.
- Excellent written communication and the ability to demonstrate clear reasoned decisions.
- Exceptional level of integrity and ethics.
- Committed to accepting the responsibility and time requirements of the role.
- Engaged and enthusiastic about working with RIBA, helping us to uphold the ‘gold standard’ amongst our membership.
- Commitment to respecting the confidentiality of any RIBA proceedings.

Time Commitment:
Appraisals are conducted on paper submissions only by an Appraisal Team of three and should take between half a day and one full day to complete.
Hearing Panels, constituted by three Panel members, are held remotely however there may be some in-person hearings that take place in London. The majority of hearings last half a day or one full day, with between half a day and one full day preparation, depending on the complexity of the matter.
Time commitment will depend on the number of complaints we receive a year; however, we anticipate your receiving four to five referrals a year (Appraisals and/or Hearing Panels).
New Panellists will be recruited initially for a three-year term, reviewed annually, with the option to renew for a further three-year term subject to successful completion of relevant annual CPD.
