Our Place-Based resources empower Key Stage 2 students to explore the world around them
Subjects: History and Geography
Place making is central to how our towns and cities are designed and built, and to the way they evolved in the past.
Through Geography and History at Key Stages 1 and 2, students can learn about the world and its people, and begin to understand that place making relates to locality, as well as to regional, national and world geographies. Learning about the relationship between physical and human processes helps to shape pupils geographical understanding. A contextual knowledge of their own location can reinforce this and bring the curriculum into focus.
How to use the resources
There are four Place-Based lessons and each one is designed to last one hour. The lessons have been designed so there is a natural progression from one to the next. However, they also work as stand-alone lessons. Some have extension activities too.
The following lessons can be explored consecutively or individually. Lessons can be condensed or expanded if you have more or less time:

Get out and about and think outside the box. Explore as near or as far as home as you wish – or even your school site - through an architectural lens. - Welcoming Buildings
- Planning Committee
Each lesson contains:
Teacher Notes – to give full instructions and background information to support your delivery of the lesson.
PowerPoint – to provide engaging visual stimulus for you to show your class, to illustrate the lesson and guide the activities. (Only classroom-based lessons have PowerPoints.) PowerPoint files use Bariol font and are designed in standard (4:3) format. Some reformatting may occur on devices that do not support these.
Explorer Activity Booklet – there is just one of these, for Lesson 2. It provides students with further guidance when they go out and explore their local area. These should be printed out A4 and stapled in the corner.

About the Place-Based resource writers:
Nancy O'Brien is a qualified teacher, educational writer and assessor. Nancy led on a wide range of government initiatives for built environment education and has worked as a board director, committee member and associate for a number of cultural and design organisations.
Graham Davey is completing his training to become an architect at Leeds Beckett University, also working for the University’s Project Office on architectural projects with charities and community groups. He recently won the Better Philadelphia Challenge. Previously he worked in the Rugby League for ten years with the Leeds Rhinos and England Rugby Wheelchair Team. This is where his ongoing interest in education and young people’s development began.
