RIBA Yorkshire SEP Network: EDI – Designing for neurodiversity

This workshop, hosted by Paul Wainwright and led by Katie Frater, explores Human Conscious Design and its role in creating inclusive spaces for neurodiverse individuals. Attendees will experience a VR simulation and engage in design exercises focused on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles. The event offers a unique opportunity for RIBA Members to learn and network on the importance of inclusive architecture.

Join us for the first in-person workshop of the year, where we’ll explore how Human Conscious Design can drive inclusivity in architecture.

Katie Frater, Projects Consultant at Tarkett, will introduce the principles behind Human Conscious Design—an approach that considers how diverse individuals perceive and interact with their environment.

Inclusive design ensures that everyone, regardless of cognitive or sensory differences, can thrive in the spaces we create. This workshop will focus on designing for neurodiversity, particularly in education, workplace, health, and aged care environments.

What to expect

  • VR experience – Understand how hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity to colours, textures, and lighting impact well-being
  • Hands-on design exercises – Turn Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles into actionable design strategies
  • Networking – Connect with fellow RIBA Members over a hot drink and light snacks

“There’s lots of talk about diversity these days… But it’s also important to have diversity in how people think.”
– Richard Thaler, Nobel Prize Winner

Don’t miss this opportunity to explore inclusive design in practice.
